University College London NHS Hospitals are on the lookout for a highly qualified Biomedical Scientist to join their expert team based at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in Queen Square. The NHS Neuroimmunology and CSF Laboratory based at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery QS Institute for Neurology is part of the Queen Square Division within UCLH. The laboratory is a supra regional centre providing specialist Neuroimmunology and CSF analytical services and associated clinical advice for NHNN, UCLH and referring laboratories throughout the UK and abroad with on-going research programmes supplementing and continuously enhancing the service provision.
This is an excellent opportunity for a qualified biomedical scientist to reach their full potential by refining their specialist skills and working alongside some of the most expert staff in the country. This role is ideal for someone with robust knowledge in immunology and biochemistry. Job Purpose: The post holder is a state registered Healthcare Scientist specialising in either Immunology or Biochemistry who wishes to develop a special interest in Neuroimmunology. The post holder performs all core scientific and interpretative work maintaining accurate logs, audits and trouble‐shoots and maintains complex equipment as required in accordance with ISO 15189. The Post holder will perform specialist tests, participate in the effective running of the department by taking on an additional role as requested and aid the laboratory in the evaluation of new tests for the service. They contribute to service delivery and the maintenance of turnaround times within the Department and train newly‐qualified Biomedical Scientists and Medical Laboratory Assistants in specialised techniques when required. Main Duties:To carry out Neuroimmunological and Neurobiochemical investigations of patient samples unsupervised (once trained and competent) as requested by the Clinical Services taking responsibility for the quality, accuracy of the results obtained to ensure compliance with ISO 15189 and in stated turnaround times. To be an active part of the laboratory team taking on specific roles as requested. To carry out specialist procedures in accordance with departmental SOPs and to participate in their regular update. Procedures include: Specialist laboratory machinery including single molecule arraysCell microscopy of cerebrospinal fluid samplesIndirect immunofluorescence for detection of autoantibodiesEnzyme‐linked immunoassays for specific proteins and antibodiesIsoelectric focusing of serum and cerebrospinal fluidElectrophoresis using agarose and polyacrylamide gelsNitrocellulose immuno‐blotting for various proteinsCell culture and maintenance of cell lines for bioassaysTo assist in test evaluation, test verification and projects as required.To operate and maintain laboratory equipment according to departmental and manufacturer’s protocols and procedures. To ensure agreed standards for turnaround times of samples and results are met and to work well within the team so this can be achieved.To verify results before they are authorised, using judgmental expertise.To inform the section leader/manager of abnormal or clinically significant results.To maintain confidentiality at all times.To be familiar and proficient with the use of the information technology systems within the Department.
