The Opportunity
Skift, the best travel media company on the planet, is seeking a full-time deputy managing editor, remote from anywhere in the UK time zone (preferably London), to oversee the daily publishing flow of Skift’s news stories and other editorial content during EMEA hours.. The deputy managing editor should be able to identify big-picture trends in the business of travel, assign stories and projects, work with writers to develop and strengthen stories, and be an excellent copy editor and a traffic-grabbing headline writer.
The deputy managing editor will work hands-on with Skift editors, reporters and freelancers around the world. This position will also require some writing, although that will not be a primary responsibility.
This is a fully remote position from the United Kingdom.
Some of What You'll Do
Manage and oversee the daily publishing flow of Skift's news product and assist the managing editor on establishing the edit team’s story-assignment budget.
Draft Skift’s premiere daily newsletter breaking down the travel industry’s most important stories of the day with a strong conversational voice.
Help reporters frame stories to be fiercely Skift-like.
Copy-edit stories, as needed.
Assist in the preparation of Skift’s daily and weekly newsletters and collaborate with the associate editor on this process.
Establish and maintain the editorial calendar in consultation with the managing editor.
Serve as a backup to the managing editor.
Assist in overseeing the training of new editorial employees and interns.
Assist in recruiting and managing relationships, including deadlines and invoices, with freelancers.
Assist in overseeing the associate editor's social media scheduling across platforms.
The Experience You Bring
Bachelor’s Degree (minimum), preferably in Journalism.
6-8 years experience in digital publishing, with strong SEO skills
A strong interest in the business of travel.
Exceptional writing and news-editing skills.
Proficiency in WordPress, Hubspot, Photoshop, and Google Docs.
Experience working with in-house editorial team as well as freelance contributors.
Excellent judgment, communication, and interpersonal skills.
The deputy managing editor must be able to manage multiple projects simultaneously, meet deadlines, and prioritize.
