The purpose of this position is to develop and support all technical activities related to compounding process engineering of Engineered Polymer Compounds and PP Compounds for LyondellBasell’s North American Advanced Polymer Solutions business. The Engineered Plastics Product and Applications Development (PAD) Process Engineer will be responsible for the process development of new and existing products, production scale up into manufacturing operations, formulation transfers between manufacturing locations, and process improvements to increase product quality and/or production rate.
QUALLIFICATIONS
Education: Minimum requirement is a Bachelor degree in areas including Polymer Science, Material Science, Chemical or Mechanical Engineering, and Chemistry.
Experience: Minimum requirement is entry level based on the education requirement outlined above. Intimate knowledge of polymer processing equipment, processing methods, auxiliary equipment and tooling, processing design criteria such as screw configuration and equipment set up, and the ability to operate such equipment. Preferred is 5+ years working experience with Polymers or Polymer Compound development and/or compounding process support, preferably in one or more Engineered Plastics, including polymers such as Styrenics (ABS, ASA, etc.), Nylon, Polyesters, Polycarbonate, PBT, Polymer Alloys, TPE/TPV materials, PP Compounds. Working knowledge of additives (such as fillers, impact modifiers, compatibilizers, stabilizers, etc.) is also preferred.
Knowledge of the properties, characteristics and processing behavior of polymeric materials, additives, and functional modifiers, with general product formulation knowledge.
Responsible for “cradle to grave” process support to the formulation of compounded Engineered resins for use in broad spectrum of targeted applications. Key skills include: Candidate must have ability to relate fundamental polymer and property concepts to develop and resolve material problems related to manufacturing and customer applications and also competence in general engineering principles. Candidate possess the skill sets of calculating specific energy, volumetric limitations, heat balance equations, and residence time with the ability to extrapolate the above data between compounding technologies for traditional and reactive extrusion compounding.
Main Job accountabilities: - Coordinate and conduct process development activities, and establish protocol for the execution of product or process trials within the Innovation Center as well as manufacturing plants. Translate for scale up, all technology needed to launch a new product or process in the designated manufacturing plant:
Outline safety detail for new materials and handling of materials.
Determine proper set up of extruder constellation and feeder locations.
Review of recipe for proper feeder / auger sizing.
Establish screw geometry or batch cycle.
Establish design of experiments to institute run parameters.
Review of scale up parameters for designated manufacturing plant.
Coordinate all baseline data (process, formulation, and quality assurance) between development and manufacturing plants.
Update database as needed to insure product movement between sites is seamless.
Support trials and issue reports documenting equipment set up and processing conditions.
Follow HSE and safety guidelines.
Provide processing training for associates at the Innovation Center and at manufacturing sites.
Assist the preventative and predictive maintenance of Innovation Center processing equipment.
Provide technical expertise to manufacturing, pilot and laboratory facilities for troubleshooting process and quality issues, and act as a continuous improvement agent for current products to guarantee quality performance, optimal processing, maximum production rates, and cost advantage in the industry.
Participate in or manage projects, including raw material qualifications, resolution of complaints, to completion as assigned by management.
Assist in development of, and support and adhere to, the quality management system and design and development procedures.
Research and assess the impact of intellectual property associated with the development of new or modified processes and applications of processes, and support the BU and legal counsel in matters of our freedom to operate, securing and protecting intellectual property, and assessment of competitive processes.
Provide guidance to the business unit in respect to processing equipment specification, supplier selection, equipment layout, installation, training and commissioning in our Innovation Center and manufacturing plant locations.
