The role will require a mix of technical engineering, stakeholder management and project management competence and experience. You must be proactive and comfortable working with minimal supervision, but also understand your own limitations and seek support/approval when required. You must be engaged in your own personal development, as it is essential that Consulting Engineers within the Building Design Department have a strong technical understanding of the areas and services that are carried out within the department. Within your role, you will be allocated to a team within the Building Design department, and you will report to the Senior Engineer leading the team. It is expected that you will be working towards Chartered Engineer status in your relevant engineering discipline.Requirements:EssentialA minimum of 2 years of experience within a Consulting Engineering role within the building services industry, ideally with a focus on communal heating systems and district heating systems / heat networks.Good understanding of heat network design, construction, commissioning and operation, particularly with regards to common pitfalls and key failures often seen in the industry.Ability to produce the calculations, deliverables and specifications across RIBA3 and RIBA4 heating and hot water systemsProficiency across Microsoft Office packages.DesirableAn ability to develop drawings on AutoCAD or another suitable software package.Direct experience of designing and delivering retrofit works within a range of existing building typologies (residential, public sector, commercial etc)Knowledge of relevant industry documentation such as CIBSE CP1.Responsibilities: Your core activities will be working within the Building Design team, which conducts retrofit design activities on existing building level communal heating systems or heat networks, typically taking designs from Concept Design Stage (RIBA2) through to Technical Design Stage (RIBA4). The Building Design team works on non-residential projects, including various typologies (universities, schools, various other public sector buildings) as well as residential projects. Your role will consist primarily of design development work across various RIBA3 and RIBA4 deliverables. To develop tender issue design documentation it is expected that you would be working with building owners to obtain necessary existing building information; undertaking detailed site surveys of existing systems; advising building owners on additional surveys and specialist input; working with specialist consultants to develop appropriate specifications (e.g. air handling unit retrofit specialists, BMS engineers, fire design engineers, structural engineers); developing basis of design documents and ensuring building owner sign off; producing space heating and hot water sizing calculations; sizing and selecting heat emitters and valves; producing building retrofit schematics and layouts; sizing and selecting plant room heating and hot water equipment; producing plant room schematics and layouts; producing specification documents, including technical specifications, schedules, description of operations and controls philosophy, pre-commissioning and water quality specifications, CDM design risk assessments; ensuring that the relevant pre-construction information is provided by the building owner and passed on to the contractors if acting as Principal Designer on the project. To develop a design documentation that allows the project to be manufactured and constructed you will be working to conduct on-site reviews of all relevant drawings and specifications, gathering comments and proposals from the supply chain, building owners and other stakeholders; providing input into HAZOPs; reviewing proposed changes from all project stakeholders; producing updated calculations and specification documentation against tender design scope; producing “issue for construction” layout and schematic drawings; producing an updated CDM design risk register.You will be expected to:Attend regular design team meetings with project stakeholders to discuss design progress and any project risks.Maintain the district heating design and project management documentation to ensure that the project is delivered in line with internal quality standards, the design is delivered on time and to budget, and various project risks are appropriately managed as the project progresses through to RIBA4 design completionWork closely with the client and heat off takers to guide all the project through the design development and commercialisation process.Work alongside Quality Assurance team who will be responsible for responding to requests for information, conducting contractor design reviews, reviewing changes proposed by the contractor and then reviewing compliance with specifications at installation, commissioning and handover to ensure that the design intent is achieved at handover of the system.About Us Climate17 is a purpose-led, international Renewable Energy & Sustainability recruitment firm.
