A control engineer plays a key role in these efforts by ensuring we have state of the art, reliable, current, and supported control system to support all these projects and digitization journey.�

British Sugar, at its four factories, uses Honeywell Experion PKS Distributed Control System (DCS) to control and optimize the plant operations. While Honeywell DCS is used to predominantly control the core factory operations, there are PLC based control systems, mainly SIEMENS and ROCKWELL, in its customer supply and packaging units.

Job Purpose

  • The role is to deliver Control System (DCS and PLCs) implementation projects, support process operations and support process improvement activities by making best use of the DCS and PLC based control systems.
  • The scope of the role includes hardware specifications, software specifications & development, installation, and commissioning.
  • The scope of the role also includes helping British Sugar with its Industry 4.0 journey and developing future skill set required to deliver and run industry 4.0 use cases.
  • The role will report into the site Electrical and Control engineer at the Newark Sugar factory in Nottinghamshire.

  • Full Time
  • Hybrid approach where factory operational conditions allow.

Salary Range

Grade 6

Core Accountabilities

  • Be involved with the maintenance of the software and hardware components of the factory control systems.
  • Be a point of contact to assist operations during factory issues. Being a member of the control team out of hours on call rota.
  • Work with operational staff to create and modify control strategies across the factory while ensuring the audit trail of the changes.
  • Consistently uphold the utmost standards of personal health and safety, while effectively collaborating with fellow team members to accomplish assigned tasks safely and efficiently.
  • Manage changes through established Plant, Process and People change management process.
  • Understand the user requirements for different projects (New plant/system, plant/system modifications or process optimization)
  • Assist in the supervision of the electrical/control design, planning, install and commissioning of new systems.
  • Manage contractors for the installation of control system, instrumentation, cabling systems and commissioning activities.
  • Engage with key stakeholders on the site to ensure requirements are effectively understood and adherence of the design and plan to the requirements.
  • Ensure that the design and installation comply with the British Sugar and National Standards.

Skills, Knowledge, and Competencies

  • A detail understanding of industrial control system specifically Honeywell Control Systems but including other SCADA, PLC based control systems.
  • Understanding of various industrial communication protocols e.g. Profibus, Modbus, Ethernet/IP, Profinet, HART etc.
  • A detailed understanding of I/O systems and connectivity to primary and final elements.
  • Strong IT skills and very good understanding of cyber security concepts.
  • Ability to quickly establish workflow, organise and priorities tasks.
  • Effective communication skills and stakeholder management.
  • IOSH / NEBOSH trained desirable but not essential.
  • Driven with desire to achieve, works on own initiative and ability to perform in a team environment.
