Design Engineer – Engine, Transmission, Driveline

Shrewsbury / Hybrid working (minimum of 3 days on-site per week)

Initial 6 month contract – likely to be extended                         

37.5 hours a week – 8am–4:45pm Monday to Thursday & 8am-12:30pm Friday

An opportunity has arisen for a contract Design Engineer for programs relating to new and existing commercial and defence products.

The Design Engineer will become a member of a small team of design engineers responsible for engines, transmissions, and powerpacks. They will report to the Design Team Manager and work closely with colleagues in the engineering team and wider business functions in the UK and US.

Key Accountabilities of the Design Engineer


  • Work with Senior Design Engineers to understand design and drawing requirements.
  • Create new CAD models and drawings for systems, sub-systems, assemblies, and components using Creo.
  • Interpret and apply engineering specifications appropriately.
  • Understand and apply geometric tolerancing.
  • Implement modifications to existing models and drawings via the engineering change process and Teamcenter.
  • Create and present design reviews to colleagues from the wider engineering team and other associated departments.
  • Write engineering reports.
  • Liaise with other departments, such as: manufacturing, purchasing, quality, inspection – as well as external suppliers.
  • Work closely with engineering teams in the USA and around the world to help develop the product offering to the military and defence sector.
  • Reply to queries and requests from external customers directly and via Senior Engineers and Engineering Specialists as appropriate. 
  • Work with Shrewsbury’s NPI team to define and adhere to timing schedules defined by engineering plans.
  • Support DFMEA activities.

Required Skills and Experience of the Design Engineer


  • An accredited engineering degree (2:1 or above), or equivalent experience.
  • Previous experience in a mechanical design engineer role.
  • A background in engine, transmission or driveline design is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of 3D CAD software, preferably PTC Creo.
  • An understanding of simulation tools and techniques is desirable; although not essential.
  • Experience working within multi-disciplinary engineering teams and with suppliers.
  • Good communication skills with the ability to build relationships.

Competitive Hourly Rate - Umbrella OR PAYE
