The Company

An international logistics company are seeking an experienced Senior Air Freight General Manager to join their expanding organisation based near Derby.

The Position

This is an exciting opportunity for an individual with a strong commercial mindset and a proven ability to build and grow a department from the ground up. Initially, the department will consist of a single employee, with plans to expand to at least 10 staff over the next 5 years.

The successful candidate will be a self-starter, capable of working independently, and able to navigate the challenges of setting up a department while ensuring the delivery of client-focused, cost-effective services. This role offers significant scope for personal growth and leadership, with the opportunity to shape the future of the Air Freight division.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Department Setup & Growth: Establish the Air Freight department from scratch, including designing and implementing systems and procedures to ensure efficient operations. Over time, build the team to at least 10 employees, ensuring scalable growth.
  • Time Management: Self-manage and prioritize workload effectively without the need for micromanagement, ensuring that departmental goals and deadlines are met.
  • Solution-Oriented Leadership: Proactively identify challenges and provide innovative solutions, focusing on continuous improvement.
  • Training & Development: Design and deliver training to ensure the team is equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to operate efficiently and deliver outstanding service.
  • Clear Communication: Communicate effectively at all levels, both internally and externally, to ensure alignment of goals and seamless operations.
  • Client-Focused Service: Ensure the department delivers exceptional customer service by understanding and meeting the needs of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Commercial Acumen: Apply commercial insight to optimize the department's performance, balancing customer satisfaction with profitability. Develop internal procedures that support business goals while keeping costs in line.
  • Relationship Building: Build strong working relationships with other departments, fostering a collaborative and effective team environment.
  • Staff Support & Growth: Provide management support, guidance, and mentorship to new staff as the department expands, ensuring smooth onboarding and career development opportunities.

Skills and Experience:

  • Previous experience in a senior Air freight role
  • A results driven, measured and consistent approach coupled with the ability to inspire and motivate
  • A track record of success with a methodical and structured approach through continuous improvement and delivering KPI's to effectively challenge the business
  • Experienced in the leadership and development of teams, excellent management, communication and organisational skills are essential
  • Strong commercials skills and business acumen are necessary as is the ability to identify and maximise opportunity.
