We are currently seeking a Youth Support Worker to support the safe running of our DofE Award expeditions as a DofE Team Member on an 'As and When' basis. The post holder will form part of the expedition staff team working on all expedition elements at all levels.

The expedition season typically runs from April through to October. The post holder will be notified of the expedition dates at the beginning of the season that require staff to support. There is a expectation that you will commit to a minimum of one expedition per season..

The working pattern could include training days, Practice expeditions and Qualifying expeditions including overnights. These can take place during the week and at weekends. Bronze expeditions run for 2 days/1 night. Silver expeditions run for 3 days/2 nights. Gold expeditions run for 4 days/3 nights. Gold expeditions run for 5 days inclusive of the travel time to locations such as Wales and the Lake District.

The role requires the post holder to be mobile throughout a wide operational area including travelling around the county of Essex and beyond. This may involve using the post holder's private vehicle or being a passenger in a hire vehicle. It may involve transporting service users and their belongings and to be able to do so in an emergency.

The post holder should have interest in working with and developing young people within outdoor education and possess a walking qualification or willing to undertake.

Responsibilities

• Working with, and supporting the core DofE team to deliver safe and enjoyable DofE training and expeditions
• Being available to attend training and expeditions dates, at least one commitment per expedition season
• Facilitate and encourage young people's learning and their personal and social development in accordance with the core values of youth work and the DofE Award
• Support the delivery the DofE training programme in accordance with the DofE training framework and Essex Expedition policy including tents, safe stove usage, countryside code and emergency procedures.
• Keep accurate and efficient administrative systems and record keeping as required
• Provide information and data as required
• Regularly encourage participation in chosen activities by participants
• Encourage the use of eDofE by participants
• Complete assessor reports when required to do so
• Celebrate participants achievements as often as possible

The Experience You Will Bring

• A nationally JNC recognised qualification in youth support work, minimum Level 2 (QCF, VRQ, NVQ or Local) or a willingness to undertake a qualification
• Experience of DofE Award programmes and expeditions
• Driving licence and car use is essential. A D1 licence and trailer licence is desirable.
• It is desirable for the post holder to hold the DofE Assessor Accreditation and to have completed The Intro to the DofE Course
• Evidence of recent continuous professional development
• Experience of working with innovative, social education programmes
• Ability to develop work with young people to achieve planned outcomes
• Experience of effective use of resources
• Experience of successfully involving young people in decision making processes
• Knowledge and experience of youth work methods and techniques.
• Excellent level of numeracy, literacy (GCSE A - C or equivalent or demonstrable experience) and ICT
• Work across Essex as per service needs
