Job Purpose
As a Financial Controller, you will oversee the financial management and controls, including the management of finance systems, internal processes, and tools used by the finance team. You will provide crucial information, data, reports, and guidance to the Board, CEO, and Senior Leadership Team to ensure effective decision-making and performance tracking. This role requires a commercial mindset and experience in either housing or social care, working closely with service delivery and new business teams to analyse service sustainability and support bid and tender pricing.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Lead and manage a dynamic finance team, ensuring high performance and quality service.
Develop the team's expertise through regular supervision and development reviews.
Support the CEO and Head of Corporate Services at the Finance, Investment, and Audit (FIA) Committee.
Engage with external auditors and lead the annual audit process, ensuring compliance with statutory and regulatory obligations.
Develop monthly management accounts, cash statements, and manage debtor/creditor processes.
Lead budget setting, quarterly forecast processes, and assist in long-term financial planning.
Ensure the finance system is fit for purpose and that the team is trained on software updates.
Oversee purchase ledger, invoice payment, bank reconciliation, and income collection.
Conduct annual reviews of contracts and rent agreements, ensuring accuracy and alignment with living wage and inflation increases.
Develop Five Year Financial Forecasts and assist with the Business Plan and annual reviews.
Ensure adherence to financial regulations and support the creation of new financial policies.
Manage relationships with banks and insurance providers, ensuring safe management of funds and investments.
Oversee local money management processes, providing quality assurance and reducing risk of fraud.
Manage relationships with outsourced payroll companies and the in-house People team.
Create commercial pricing models and complete tender pricing schedules with the business development team.
Engage regularly with department and budget holders to review budgets and provide financial performance support.
Participate in internal financial audits and ensure compliance with audit and HMRC requirements.
Promote awareness of cyber and financial fraud threats within the team.
Essential Qualifications and Experience
Recognized Chartered Accountant Professional Finance Qualification (ACCA/ICAS/CIMA/CIPFA) or equivalent with current accredited membership.
3+ years in a senior finance position, including line management of a finance team and developing trainee accountants.
Experience in preparing year-end accounts and delivering financial reports to various audiences.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel and Word.
Strong leadership and line management skills, with the ability to motivate and set clear targets.
Excellent planning, scheduling, and ability to meet deadlines.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a collaborative team approach.
Desirable Experience and Skills
Experience in social care or third sector organisations.
Familiarity with SDM Housing Management Software.
Knowledge of the Scottish Housing Regulator and obligations as a Registered Social Landlord.
Awareness of charity finance law and fundraising strategies.
