Job descriptionWe are recruiting for a Funds & Asset Management Senior BD Manager to join our Marketing department in London on a permanent basis.Role purposeThis role will be responsible for providing day-to-day senior BD support and advice to the lawyers in the London Funds & Asset Management team. This role is also responsible for working alongside the Global Funds Steering Committee (made up of partners in London, Luxembourg, New York and Hong Kong) and driving the BD strategy for Funds & Asset Management globally. Our global Funds & Asset Management offering is an integral part of our Private Capital strategy – a strategic priority for the firm. Private Capital encompasses a number of alternative asset classes namely, private credit, private equity, infrastructure, real estate and other institutional investors (i.e. sovereign wealth funds, pension funds). Our global Funds & Asset Management practice is relevant to all of these asset classes, as we advise on the “upstream” aspects of these funds i.e. the fund formation, fund finance and additional fund structuring work. A strong go-to-market strategy for our global Funds & Asset Management group will not only generate more fund structuring mandates but, more importantly, will open the door to cross-jurisdictional transactional, regulatory, financing and tax work for the rest of the firm. This role will work closely with senior members of our practice, sector BD teams and the leadership of the respective Funds & Asset Management practice to ensure the successful delivery of the marketing and BD plans, improve collaboration, and drive the client strategy.Role and responsibilitiesBusiness planning and strategy:Work directly with the Global Funds Steering Committee and the global Funds & Asset Management partners to define and drive a cohesive BD and Marketing strategy across the firm with a focus on increasing collaboration between partners/lawyers undertaking Funds & Asset Management work and driving engagement with our priority clients at both a global, regional and local level.Ensure this strategy for the Funds & Asset Management group is linked in with the firm’s Private Capital strategy.Develop and manage Global and Regional budget(s) that are agreed with central management annually, monitoring spend, making decisions on allocation, measuring and reporting on ROI.Work proactively with the partners and actively contribute to their business plans. Act as an internal consultant and coach partners/lawyers on marketing and business development.Facilitate the integration and on-boarding of any partner lateral hires or partner promotions within the groups.Client relationship management:Work with London and Global partners to develop an international co-ordinated client targeting / cross selling / CRM programme for the Funds & Asset Management and Tax groups. Use market research and intelligence to identify new client or market targeting opportunities, recommend new business development ideas and actions and work with the relevant partners and BD / CRM colleagues to execute them.Analyse our existing relationships to develop a strategy to more consistently cross-sell our upstream fund relationships into downstream transactional relationships.Track and monitor the work we do with our clients, spotting opportunities and developing strategies to target additional work and connecting with relevant stakeholders across the firm.Act as lead client relationship manager for an agreed group of priority clients and support the relationship partners with plans and tactics to advance these relationships.Client communications, events and marketing:Lead on the generation of innovative marketing communications for the group including:integrated, global thought leadership campaignsclient briefingscontent-led events such as conferences, seminars and client academies/universitiesand advise on the relevant channels and tools (e.g. blogs, podcasts, social media) to raise the group’s profile with these communications.Lead on the organisation of marketing events and a programme of effective client hospitality (overseeing junior team members, the central events team and PAs on the execution) and the production of related literature using the creative services team.Oversee marketing processes (e.g. CVs, reporting on deals worldwide, effective use of CRM database, intranet and internet sites) with junior team members and departmental PAs and work with the PR team to maintain effective press coverage on major deal and market developments.Devise an appropriate strategy for the global group’s legal directory process and oversee delivery by junior / regional team members. Business development:Use an understanding of the firm’s international partner and BD network to develop new opportunities and leverage innovative ideas from this practice area to others. Sharing ideas with colleagues in order to enhance quality of work and developing best practice for BD as a whole.Play an advisory and hands on role (depending on the strategic value) in the Funds & Asset Management and Tax  pitching process for the global group.Create and embed a global process and infrastructure for managing lower-value and/or regional/local pitches and credentials including a self-service model for fee earners and training and guidance for regional teams for consistency of brand and content.Devise and implement a programme for client listening, pitch debriefs and matter reviews.Work with Knowledge and Research teams to keep yourself and the wider team up to date with trends affecting the respective products and clients and use market data and intelligence to identify business opportunities and/or inform our strategy for going to market.Internal communications and marketing trainingOversee the creation and maintenance of a flow of international Funds & Asset Management market intelligence, client activity and the ongoing BD and Marketing program to partners and associates as well as the BD team (e.g. via internal comms channels, offsites, team meetings)Provide a structured and tailored programme of training on business development techniques to associates and PAs within the group.Playing a role in the training of business development team members across the marketing department, specifically those with a Funds & Asset Management remit, on the group’s strategy.Team managementDirect line management of a Senior BD Assistant based in Belfast Dotted-line / matrix management for an international team who have a Funds & Asset Management remit across the networkKey requirementsCan challenge underlying issues with current strategic vision and delivery, questioning the rationale behind existing concepts, influencing senior stakeholders on implementation of new ideas, playing an influencing role in partner meetings regarding BDSignificant relevant BD and/or CRM experience.Subject matter / industry experience in relation to Funds & Asset Management is essential. Can lead on communication, coordination and strategic oversight of the international Funds & Asset Management BD community.Strong client focus and a commercial approach.Strong experience of managing and developing the careers of team members.A proactive approach, creativity and tenacity.Ability to work to deadlines, juggle projects and deliver under pressure.Additional information - ExternalA&O Shearman is a new global industry-leading law firm, with nearly 50 offices in 29 countries worldwide.
