Genome Analysis Team Leader

Posted 3 days ago

Over the past five years, theEnsemblproject has witnessed a dramatic growth in the breadth of species and depth of genomic annotations, which are collectively integrated into the Ensembl data stores. With major global biodiversity initiatives and increasing efforts to apply genomics in agriculture to improve productivity and sustainability, coupled with the continued evolution of sequencing technologies, the rate of data growth is expected to continue. To accommodate these burgeoning volumes of genomic data, a new generation of Ensembl browser has been developed, supported by a complex backend infrastructure.
We are excited to launch a Team Leader EMBL Faculty position to head the ongoing developments and manage the emerging demands of Ensembl as lead of the Genome Analysis team atEMBL-EBI.
Your role Your primary responsibility will be to lead a multidisciplinary team of approximately 20 staff members, including software developers, bioinformaticians and data curators to build coordinated data infrastructures to service different scientific communities that leverage the underlying Ensembl infrastructure. This may include omic data portals or tracking tools for agriculture and biodiversity.
You will work closely with other Team Leaders within the broader Ensembl project, as well as other teams at EMBL-EBI, including our biomolecular data archival resources, to ensure an integrated data presentation, improve efficiency, and produce timely data releases for querying and data retrieval via the Ensembl browser or associated application program interface (API).
In your role you will develop a technical knowledge of scientific service software development and a proven ability to strategically coordinate development of complex resources and transition legacy codebases. In particular, you will develop the scientific strategy concerning the genomes, data types and visualisation that are required by the scientific community. This will involve initiating new approaches to how genomic data is co-ordinated and distributed to ensure that Ensembl represents global genomic research efforts. To be successful in this role, you will be required to anticipate future data resource needs of researchers in the field, as well as understand the importance of teamwork and collaboration, and being focused on the delivery of key tasks.
Thus, we are looking for a scientist with a passion for open data, who will undertake scientific horizon scanning, strategic thinking, fundraising, and assume a leading role in the engagement and collaboration with a wide variety of stakeholders in Europe and globally.
This role reports to the Section Head for Genome Assembly and Annotation,Rob Finn.
