Position Overview:�Our client is seeking a dedicated and reliable Gravedigger to join our team. As a Gravedigger, you will play an essential role in maintaining a respectful and dignified cemetery environment. The ideal candidate will be able to carry out physical tasks efficiently while adhering to safety protocols, working with the team, and respecting the sensitivities associated with burial services. This role requires a COTS (Certificate of Technical Competence) qualification.



Key Responsibilities:




  • Excavate graves for burials using manual tools and machinery (e.g., shovels, backhoes).

  • Ensure graves are dug to the proper depth, size, and alignment according to specified requirements.

  • Properly handle and secure materials, such as soil, sand, and gravel, ensuring safe and efficient operations.

  • Maintain the cleanliness and safety of the burial site before, during, and after each service.

  • Fill graves following burials and ensure ground is leveled and tamped down to prevent settling.

  • Assist with the placement of grave markers and memorials as required.

  • Maintain equipment, tools, and vehicles, ensuring they are in good working order.

  • Adhere to all safety standards and cemetery policies, with a focus on both safety and respect for the deceased and their families.

  • Provide support during funeral services, assisting in transporting caskets and setting up for the burial.

  • Work closely with cemetery staff and funeral directors to ensure timely and coordinated operations.



Qualifications:




  • COTS (Certificate of Technical Competence) qualification is required.

  • Previous experience in manual labor, construction, or similar physical work is preferred.

  • Ability to operate backhoes, digging machinery, and other related equipment (training may be provided).

  • Strong attention to detail, ensuring graves are dug correctly and safely.

  • Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions.

  • Ability to lift heavy objects (50 lbs or more) and perform strenuous physical tasks.

  • Compassionate, respectful, and able to maintain professionalism when interacting with grieving families.

  • Knowledge of safety protocols and willingness to follow established procedures.

  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work well with a team.



Working Conditions:




  • Primarily outdoor work in varying weather conditions.

  • Occasional weekend or evening work may be required to accommodate funeral schedules.

  • Physical labor, including digging, lifting, and operating machinery.
