Job title: Head of EnglishLocation: HolbornResponsible to: Deputy ProvostSalary: £50k - £60k per annumResponsible for: Click English lead, English in-sessional leadJob descriptionOverall purposeThe role of the Head of English is to lead on the development and implementation of all aspects of RCL’s English language admissions policy, English testing and English language support for students. The remit is to advise on RCL’s English language policy and entry requirements and ensure that English language testing is in line with policy, entry requirements of the relevant programme, and UKVI requirements. The role is also responsible for managing the development and delivery of high-quality and impactful English programming to students at all stages of the student journey, including pre-sessional and in-sessional.Specific duties and responsibilitiesThe role will operate in conjunction with the established operating and delivery platforms but will lead on the following:English Testing Advising on RCL’s English language policy and entry requirements in line with programme requirements and UKVI policy.Overseeing the delivery of efficient, effective, and consistent English language testing in line with policy, the relevant entry requirements, and with UKVI requirements.Developing information and support to students in the testing process.Using data from a range of sources to monitor and report on testing timelines and outcomes and responding accordingly.English Programming Developing exceptional English language pre-sessional and in-sessional programming, including general English, business & professional English and academic English, which are relevant for students across all schools and disciplines and at various levels from Level 3 – Level 7.Overseeing the development of best-in-class content and materials that meet the needs of students.Monitoring the quality and effectiveness of programming and content and driving continuous improvement based on student needs, feedback and data.Where assessment is required, ensure the assessment experience is fair and fit for purpose, including assignment briefs, the formative regime, and marking and moderation process in line with RCL and partner institution policies and procedures.Leadership Leading and supporting the English testing, teaching and operational teams to ensure they can discharge their responsibilities effectively.Utilising data to monitor and report on performance and insight to implement impactful interventions.Maintain an appropriate presence in centre to ensure visibility and support for students and staff.Deliver appropriate training/updates on policy, programmes, and processes as needed.Provide training resources to support new staff and lead on training/briefing sessions as required.Undertake appropriate quality assurance tasks in line with QA guidelines (e.g., observations, materials audit).Ensure compliance with regulation (internal and external).Influence the academic development and scholarship agenda by supporting staff development needs.Additional duties:Engage with student-facing activities, eg induction, F2F sessions, office hours as needed.Engage with University employability agenda as required.Undertake appropriate academic & scholarship activity (module leadership/teaching).Person SpecificationEXPERIENCE & PERSONAL QUALITIESEssential:Extensive experience of teaching English in a Higher Education settingAn understanding of a range of English interventions and programming at all stages of the student journeyA leadership role in the development and enhancement of innovative English programmingCommercially and educationally focussed.Desirable:Fellowship of the HEA or other relevant professional bodyTECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE & SKILLSEssential:Excellent data skills with the ability to use data to drive decision makingExcellent leadership and communication skills.A strategic thinker with the ability to envision, design and develop new approaches to English teaching and learning.Desirable:A flexible and responsive approach to workload and the ability to proactively prioritiseEDUCATION & PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONSEssential:Level 7 (Post-Graduate) or relevant Professional QualificationA TEFL QualificationDesirable:A Teaching QualificationFellowship of the HEA or other relevant professional bodyThis position requires candidates to undergo a DBS check as part of the application process.
