Job overview

This post has been created as a locum position (12 months in the first instance) to cover the Sabbatical period of one of the structural interventional Cardiologists. The post will therefore support the Structural Interventional Service, and in particular the TAVI service which is currently expanding rapidly to meet huge clinical demand.

Main duties of the job

  1. The post-holder will be a fully trained and independent interventional Cardiologist with expertise in structural intervention, particularly TAVI.
  2. The successful candidate will be fully trained in coronary intervention and be an independent, first operator. They would be expected to undertake primary PCI on the current PCI rota, with mentored on-call commitments for the first 6 months if necessary.
  3. The post holder will have experience in TAVI and will receive mentoring/training to become an independent first operator. Training in mitral/tricuspid edge-to-edge repair techniques and other structural interventions will be provided depending on experience.
  4. This individual will perform outpatient clinics independently, run catheter lab coronary intervention lists, participate in the Consultant-of-the-week and on-call rota, and provide support to the service as required.
  5. The successful candidate will support the running of the cardiac catheter lab, inpatient, and outpatient activities to facilitate workflow, working closely with Clinical Nurse Specialists to prioritize patient investigations and treatment.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  1. Together with the other interventional Consultants, provide a service for TAVI and coronary patients, including all aspects of interventional treatment and relevant management duties for the proper functioning of the department.
  2. Shared responsibility with the other Interventional Consultants for providing 24-hour, 7-day a week cover for the Cardiology Unit on a rota basis, including covering colleagues’ periods of annual leave and short-term sickness.
  3. Clinical supervision of junior medical staff as a shared responsibility with other consultant colleagues.
  4. Responsible for teaching, examination, and accreditation duties as required and contributing to Continuing Medical Education and clinical governance initiatives.
  5. Responsible for outpatient clinic commitments in peripheral hospitals as agreed by the CAG Executive and Divisional management team.
  6. Contribute to departmental research interests in accordance with the Trust’s R&D framework.
  7. Contribute to the Audit Programme.
  8. Engage in the formulation, implementation, and monitoring of the Division’s Business Plan.
  9. Conduct all activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan for Cardiology services.
  10. Exercise professional leadership for all staff working in the specialty.
  11. Work with clinical and professional colleagues to ensure productivity and job satisfaction of staff within the specialty.
  12. Undertake Divisional management duties as agreed with the Divisional Manager/Clinical Director.
  13. Comply with all Trust infection prevention and control policies.
  14. Be accountable for implementation of the Code of Practice within own department/area of responsibility.
  15. Prepare for and undertake protective interventions in a manner consistent with evidence-based practice and maintaining patient safety.

Registration

  • Wide experience in all aspects of Cardiology and Intervention, culminating in award of CCT or equivalent.
  • Specialist training in coronary intervention – independent coronary operator status.
  • Significant exposure to and experience in TAVI.
  • First operator TAVI ability.

Administration

  • Experience in day-to-day organisation of Cardiology services in a busy Teaching Hospital.
  • Familiar with current structure of Health Service and conversant with recent initiatives and changes.

Management and Leadership

  • Able to demonstrate leadership capability within multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Management course and/or qualification.

Audit

  • Thorough understanding of principles of medical audit. Must have undertaken and completed audit projects.

Research and Publications

  • Experience of clinical research.
  • Publication of relevant review articles or case reports.
  • Relevant research experience in one or more aspects of Interventional Cardiology.

Teaching

  • Experience of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and exam preparation.
  • Teaching skills course/qualification.
