Role : Full Time

Gateshead Council's Looked After Children Team is seeking a dedicated and experienced Children's Social Worker to join our team. We are committed to ensuring the wellbeing and positive outcomes for children in care.

About the Role and Responsibilities:


  • Championing the Needs of Looked After Children: Provide direct support and advocacy to children in care, ensuring their needs are met and they have access to the best possible care and support.
  • Developing Individualized Care Plans: Work collaboratively with children, their families, foster carers, and other professionals to create individualised care plans.
  • Maintaining a Child-Centered Approach: Ensure children's voices are heard and their rights are respected.
  • Promoting Positive Relationships: Build trusting and stable relationships with children in care and their foster families.
  • Supporting Achievement: Promote positive relationships, and support children in care to achieve their full potential by accessing educational, social, and personal development opportunities.
  • Managing Caseloads: Manage a caseload of children in care, ensuring their needs are met and they receive appropriate support.
  • Collaborative Practice: Work closely with families, children, foster carers, and other professionals, including schools, health services, and the police, to deliver effective and timely interventions.
  • Maintaining Accurate Records: Maintain accurate records and documentation, adhering to relevant legislation and guidelines.
  • Contributing to Team Development: Contribute to the ongoing development and improvement of the team's service delivery.
  • Advocating for Children: Represent the needs of children in care, ensuring their voices are heard and their rights are protected.

Key Requirements:


  • Qualified Social Worker (DipSW, CQSW, BA Hons in Social Work, or equivalent).
  • Social Care England registration.
  • Updated DBS check.
  • Experience working with looked after children and their families, particularly those in foster care.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation and guidance related to supporting looked after children.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and manage competing demands.
  • Commitment to child-centered practice and a commitment to improving the lives of vulnerable children and families.
