At CMS2, we specialise in the design and manufacture of atmospheric control systems for the defence industry. We are experts in enabling high availability atmosphere management systems to generate breathable air for submariners, allowing boats to remain underwater for long periods of time.
Role Details:
Our Manufacturing Engineer will play a significant part in the development, organisation, and ongoing business improvement of production operations, proactively identify opportunities for process improvements, work across multiple functions of the business, but especially closely with Design and Technical functions, and Project Managers.
They will assist in the develop a successful workflow, develop new procedures, policies, and identify equipment / tooling to increase efficiency in all operations.
They will also contribute to improving health & safety and continuous improvement.
The role holder will be expected to form a close working relationship with the Production Manager, Quality Engineers, Technical Design functions, HSE, Inspection staff, Project managers and Project engineers.
Key responsibilities and tasks
Identify opportunities for continuous improvement by reviewing production processes and tooling to identify and implement processes that will improve Quality and reduce Cost & Time, (QCD)
Reviewing developments in machinery, tools and manufacturing techniques that will sustain effective and lasting change.
Participate in and support improvement projects – LEAN deployment, 5S and continuous improvement, projects will cover the full breadth of operations and wider business processes it is envisaged that at least 25% of role will involve projects such as this.
Monitor performance by gathering relevant data, identify, and implement improvement opportunities.
Working with technical functions and project engineering develop and deploy effective NPI / NPD and DFM / DFQ / DFMRO processes, techniques and culture.
Support and manage the development of works order routings & work instructions, MITP (Manufacturing & inspection Test Plans) and graphical build books to aid and control the production process.
Develop effective relationships that enable the influence of new product development to be designed for manufacture and support other department members to ensure we are working together to achieve overall business goals.
Create and maintain the ethos of a ‘right first time' culture.
Justify the return on any investment delivering an easily measurable ROI on each project or capital investment.
Implementation of legislative and best practice standards associated with continuous improvement.
General activities:
Carry out any other ad-hoc duties as required to support the needs of the business.
Provide a professional backup service for colleagues during peak times or during absence.
Maintain continuous professional development to ensure knowledge is up to date.
Qualifications, experience, and skills:
Essential
HND or Degree in Mechanical / Electrical / Manufacturing Engineering or relevant experience
H&S Champion with knowledge of ISO18001
IOSH Managing Safely
Knowledge of NPI / NPD / Prototyping
Flexibility, enthusiasm, self-motivated and able to work well under own initiative.
Able to build long-term successful client partnerships, both internally and externally
Able to negotiate and influence others.
Decision-making / problem solving skills.
Strong presentation skills, confident speaker
Understanding of continuous improvement methodologies and tools (e.g. Six Sigma, LEAN, 5S etc.)
Previous experience of an ERP / MRP system
Practical competence in mechanical assembly
Ability to read and interpret documents such as drawings, specifications and procedures.
Desirable:
NEBOSH or on the pathway towards
Knowledge of BS.8888 drawing practices
Experience of working within a Defence environment
Knowledge of ISO9001, AS9100D or a similar QMS system
Six Sigma, Green Belt Lean Six Sigma Qualified
Role travel requirements:
The duties of this appointment relate to the UK, but you may be required to travel when required by the Company. It is not envisaged that you shall be required to work outside the UK for more than one month.
Other requirements:
Candidates must have an existing right to live and work in the UK
Candidates must have passed UK security clearance to Security Check level or be able to obtain this level. To gain SC clearance you will normally have had to have been a resident in the UK for a minimum of 5 years.
Candidates must be able to obtain a basic security check which will normally require you to have been resident in the UK for at least 3 years.
