Metal Materials Engineer

We are recruiting for a Metal Materials Engineer for one of our automotive clients based in Cranfield.
You will be working for a globally recognised automotive company. This is a long-term contract role. The contract is on an ongoing basis a may run for several years.
Key Responsibilities of the Metal Materials Engineer:
• Metallic materials design and development for all vehicle projects, covering new model con-ceptual design through to market performance evaluation.
• Analyse material properties, manufacturability, and cost to select the best metals for each application.
• Analyse material properties such as strength, weight, corrosion resistance, formability, and recyclability to determine suitability for specific automotive applications.
• Stay up to date on the latest advancements in metal materials, forming processes, and join-ing techniques.
• Participate in design reviews and provide technical expertise to ensure manufacturability and functionality.
• Work effectively with cross-functional teams, including manufacturing, purchasing, and quality control.
• Collaborate with design engineers and manufacturing teams to ensure optimal material se-lection and integration into vehicle production processes.
• Lead or participate in laboratory testing of new and existing metal materials to verify perfor-mance and identify potential issues.
• Undertaking new material introductions at the manufacturing plant, market surveys, per-formance benchmarking and target setting.
• Author technical reports and presentations summarising research findings and recommen-dations.
• Data gathering, analysis, and reporting to staff of all levels across the organisation.
• Carry out work necessary to deliver metal material design and homologation tasks on BIW with cost, quality, and timing as key metrics.
Qualifications & Experience for the Metal Materials Engineer:
• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, metallurgical engineering, or a related field.
• Extensive experience of metallic materials applied in the automotive industry. Experience of vehicle construction technologies, steel, and aluminium materials.
• Knowledge of metallic materials, especially sheet steel and aluminium for automotive con-struction.
• Strong understanding of metal properties, forming processes (e.g., stamping, welding), and joining techniques.
• Experience of supplier management is necessary.
• Experience working with other automotive OEMs is highly desirable.
• CAD skills are highly preferable.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Driving licence valid in the UK/EU is necessary.
• Competent with Microsoft Office software
Hours & Pay for the Metal Materials Engineer:
• Monday to Friday
• 39 hours per week
• £30.78p/h
