Occupational Therapist
£38-£40 per hour
Adult occupational therapists play a vital role in helping adults overcome challenges and achieve their goals in everyday life. They focus on enabling individuals to participate in meaningful activities and live fulfilling lives, despite any physical, cognitive, or mental health limitations they may face. Here are some of their key duties:
Assessment and Evaluation:
Interviewing the individual and their family/caregivers to understand their goals, concerns, and current functioning.
* Observing the individual's performance in everyday activities, such as dressing, bathing, cooking, or driving.
* Conducting standardised tests to assess cognitive abilities, physical function, and sensory processing.
* Reviewing medical records to gather information about the individual's diagnosis, medical history, and medications
Analyse findings: Occupational therapists analyse the assessment information to identify the individual's strengths, weaknesses, and potential barriers to participation in meaningful activities.
Developing Intervention Plans:
Establish goals: Based on the assessment, occupational therapists collaborate with the individual to establish realistic and achievable goals. These goals may focus on improving:
* Physical skills such as mobility, balance, coordination, and strength.
* Cognitive skills such as attention, memory, problem-solving, and decision-making.
* Sensory processing skills such as responding to sensory stimuli and managing sensory sensitivities.
* Social and emotional skills such as communication, interaction, and coping with stress.
* Daily living skills such as self-care, home management, work, and leisure activities
Create intervention plans: They create individualised intervention plans tailored to the individual's needs and goals. These plans may include:
* Therapeutic exercises and activities to improve physical function, cognitive skills, and sensory processing.
* Adaptive equipment and assisitive devices to modify tasks and environments to make them more accessible.
* Strategies and techniques to enhance daily living skills and promote independent living.
* Education and training for the individual, family, and caregivers to understand the individual's needs, how to provide support, and how to manage their condition
Referrals: If needed, occupational therapists may refer individuals to other professionals, such as physicians, physical therapists, or speech-language pathologists, for specialised support.
Treatment and Interventions:
Implement plans: Occupational therapists implement the intervention plans through:
* Providing hands-on therapy to improve physical function, cognitive skills, and sensory processing.
* Teaching strategies and techniques to enhance daily living skills and promote independence.
* Adapting the environment to make it more accessible and supportive for the individual.
* Collaborating with the individual, family, and caregivers to ensure the successful implementation of the plan.
Monitor progress: They regularly monitor the individual's progress, evaluating their performance and making adjustments to the intervention plan as needed.
Promote participation: Occupational therapists encourage the individual's active participation in their treatment, empowering them to take ownership of their recovery and rehabilitation.
