Head of Private Markets FoF (& other senior investment team members as required)
Business Description:
London-based Global investment manager, investing across private equity directs and funds, public equity, fixed income, alternatives and real estate. The PE Fund of Funds team specifically is responsible for sourcing and investing the clients’ capital across the best available third-party private equity funds and sourcing co-invest flow from such relationships.
Purpose of the Role:
The Manager Selection Analyst role sits within the Investment Management Team based in London. This role will support the Head of Private Markets FoF and team in the implementation of external manager research and monitoring activities covering a range of strategies across mainly private markets. The role requires the successful candidate to build strong working relationships with both the internal investment team and third-party managers. This manager selection role will be exposed to a number of Private Equity and Alternatives Strategies, e.g. VC, Buyout, Growth Equity, Credit, Real Estate, sector specific funds. This role can also be expanded over time to assist in Hedge Fund manager selection programme and support less liquid fixed income fund strategies.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
Idea Generation and Research
Identify, research and recommend private equity managers in assigned areas of coverage
Use and further develop the quantitative screening tools (including conducting public and private markets benchmarking analysis)
Produce relevant quantitative analysis to supplement the qualitative due-diligence process across existing and new investments
Participate in the fund manager due diligence process including in-house meetings and on-site visits (where necessary)
Detailed review of Datarooms and conducting best in class operational due diligence reviews and manager references (where appropriate)
Write research reports on existing and/or potential managers and update existing reports with any news or new developments, which could impact the investment thesis
Prepare recommendations for inclusion of funds for the IC approval and over time be involved in sourcing of new manager relationships
Assist in review of commercial and legal agreements (e.g. Limited Partnership Agreements, Prospectuses, Side Letters) together with the in-house Legal team
Draft and prepare all required documents for the IC and support and monitor the execution of legal and financial terms (including managing approval process of Aifm managers/administrators as relevant)
Ensure investment due-diligence processes are followed, including the recording/filing of relevant documentation
Collaborate pro-actively alongside other team members to enhance the team's idea generation and evaluation processes, systems and tools
Assist the team in sourcing and evaluating co-investment opportunities alongside the Direct Private Equity team
Monitoring
Prepare and present quarterly performance reports and ad-hoc updates to the IC and pipeline investments
Monitor and assess managers' performance, produce and interpret attribution analysis and provide overall summaries
Bring to the team's attention any changes at the manager level such as key personnel changes, style drift or any material impact to the original investment thesis
Support all investment activities and ensure that they comply with the agreed investment guidelines
Carry out any other similar or related duties as assigned by line manager
Ensure monitoring processes are followed, including the recording of relevant documentation
Periodic review of capital account statements (review of NAV, fees, expenses and overall performance KPI metrics)
Periodic review of cashflow forecasts (expected capital calls to advise on overall liquidity management)
Liaise with the Operations Team for flow of information / quarterly reporting
Preparation and sourcing of ad hoc industry / sector reports to support colleagues
Conducting regular (minimum quarterly) manager update calls/meetings (in person or via Zoom/Teams) and preping team in advance of the meetings
Education:
Degree level educated preferably gained within a finance or economics related discipline
Possession of post-graduate qualification or professional accreditation (MBA, CFA, CAIA or equivalent) is an advantage
Experience:
Significant (at least 3-5 years) experience of fund manager research or related (either in Private and/or Public equities) at an investment house / Family Office or Consultancy
Experience of interviewing fund managers, researching investment opportunities, analysing performance data and presenting to Investment Committees or portfolio managers
Applicable financial markets and/or institutional fund manager experience
Technical Expertise / Skills / Knowledge:
Strong working knowledge of investment strategies, capital markets and relevant fund manager universes
Experience across a range of asset classes / strategies, liquid and illiquid is an advantage
Show intellectual curiosity; be open to challenge and comfortable presenting and debating investment ideas with colleagues
Highly inquisitive approach to scrutinizing track records
Good listening and questioning skills as a significant part of the research process is conducted through interviewing fund managers
Excellent written and analytical skills and an ability to produce clear and articulate investment recommendations
In-depth understanding of private equity investments
Strong quantitative and analytical skills, detail orientation, problem solver, ability to synthesise data to make relevant and logical inferences.
Knowledge of financial accounting, corporate governance rules, investment valuation techniques, investment styles/factors and statistics
Be proactive and embrace a ‘to-do’ and ‘can-do’ attitude with a commitment to learning
Ability to use different information systems (Bloomberg, Factset, Morningstar, Pitchbook, Preqin etc)
Fluent in both written and spoken English
Excellent skills in Excel, Powerpoint, Word
Compensation:
Remuneration will be commensurate with the duties and demands of the role and the experience of the candidate Combination of base salary and variable annual cash bonus
