By your second year as a fully trained and deployable property specialist you may be able to earn £51,039, not accounting for overtime or on call payments.
About Us
MI5 keeps the country safe from serious threats like terrorism and attempts by states to harm the UK, its people and way of life. We carry out investigations by obtaining, analysing, and assessing intelligence, and then work with a range of partners including MI6 and GCHQ to disrupt these threats. Through our protective security arm, we provide advice and guidance to government, businesses and other organisations about how to keep themselves safe. A role in MI5 means you'll do unique and challenging work in a supportive and encouraging environment, making a real difference to UK national security.
The Role
As a Property Specialist (Operational), you’ll provide specialist building trade services for MI5. From carpentry and joinery, to minor electrical works and plastering, you’ll undertake a range of building tasks and carry out work to a high standard, often at short notice and under tight deadlines. This is a tradesperson role unlike any other, as you’ll be using your skills directly to support critical missions. It’s also dynamic – requiring you to react quickly to change as your team provides a 24/7 service to keep the country safe.
We invest in our people, and we’ll work with you to develop your career. You’ll start your journey with us undertaking in-depth training that will take up to 18 months. Following on from this, you’ll have access to continual training and career development support. This role has the potential to lead to other opportunities across MI5 and our partner organisations MI6 and GCHQ in the future. If you’re interested in building a varied career, then we’ll support you to make that happen.
With our ever-changing intelligence needs there is never a dull day. There’s no formal shift pattern for this role, and you’ll occasionally need to work out of hours, and at night. We may also ask you to work away from home for short periods of time, along with the possibility of overseas deployments. For additional hours worked, you’ll receive overtime payments, alongside your regular pay and any specialist pay.
About You
To apply for this role, you’ll need to hold a City & Guilds Level 3, BTEC, NVQ or equivalent qualification in joinery/carpentry, and be able to evidence working experience that supports your skills.
You’ll already have a good working knowledge of the building trade, along with a full UK driving licence. Due to the nature of this role, you’ll also be required to pass an initial fitness test, which will be repeated on a yearly basis. You’ll get 2 hours per week of paid time to help you maintain the required fitness standards.
You’ll be self-motivated and flexible, with the ability to adapt to changing requirements. As a good communicator, working closely with people from all types of backgrounds will come naturally to you. You’ll also be comfortable working autonomously, making decisions, and working under pressure to tight timescales without compromising on quality. You should also have a basic understanding of IT packages such as Word, Outlook or Excel.
Training and Development
The initial training for the role may take up to 18 months. This will consist of a combination of in-house training carried out by experienced team members, and external courses. This will help you gain the skills you need to apply your existing experience to our specialist ways of working, and we will make every effort to help you succeed. As part of the training, we will assess you on a pass/fail basis to help determine your suitability for the role. If you fail there may be other opportunities open to you, but this is not guaranteed. Following on from your initial training, we’ll continue to support your career development with access to further training both in-house and externally.
Rewards and Benefits
You’ll receive a starting salary £40,629 rising to £43,923 after one year. The role also attracts a technical framework allowance and disruption allowance that you’ll have the opportunity to apply for once your training is complete, and you meet the technical qualifying criteria. By your second year as a fully trained and deployable property specialist you may be able to earn £51,039, not accounting for overtime or on call payments.
Other benefits include:
25 Days Annual Leave automatically rising to 30 days after 5 years' service, and an additional 10.5 days public and privilege holidays
Personal Learning Budget
Excellent pension scheme
Cycle to work scheme
Facilities such as a gym, restaurant and on-site coffee bars
Paid parental and adoption leave.
Interest free season ticket loan
