Departmental Safety OfficerPermanent, full-timeCentral OxfordHigher EducationBurman Recruitment is supporting a key client to appoint a Departmental Safety Officer on a full-time and permanent basis.Main DutiesReview and implement health & safety regulations and university guidance.Advise on and monitor risk assessments and provide expert advice on safety matters.Oversee and coordinate with safety officers and specialists within the department.Support and advise researchers on risk assessments for novel activities.Manage safety culture initiatives and promote best practices.Investigate accidents and incidents, ensuring compliance with reporting procedures.Maintain safety records and prepare reports for safety committees.Line manage the Deputy Departmental Safety Officer and the Biological & Chemical Safety Officer.Respond to significant health & safety incidents/emergencies as needed.Personal SpecificationsEssential:Membership of a recognized occupational safety and health organization (e.g., MIOSH).Educated to NVQ level 4 or higher in a relevant subject (e.g., science, engineering).NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent qualification.Up-to-date knowledge of health and safety legislation and best practices.Experience and expertise in various safety areas such as mechanical systems, PUWER, high pressure gases, DSEAR, cryogenics, radiation protection, battery systems, fire safety, nanotechnology, and workshops.Experience with risk assessments, safety auditing, and delivering training.Ability to handle emergencies and work autonomously.Strong interpersonal and communication skills.Proficient in Microsoft Office.Desirable:Experience in an industrial, higher education, or research environment.Previous management experience.Familiarity with databases.Experience developing online training materials.
