Role: Senior Ergonomics Engineer
Salary/Rate: £ 675 pd (inside IR35)
Location: Mainly remote - 2 days p/month on site in Plymouth
Contract Duration: 6 months
A Senior Ergonomics Engineer with experience providing expert support on the design, safety assessments, and human performance validation of high-hazard systems is required by a consultancy working with some of the biggest government, infrastructure, defence, and security projects in the UK.
This Senior Ergonomics Engineer role is mainly remote, based between working 2 days per month on site in Plymouth and the remainder of the time working remotely.
The Senior Ergonomics Engineer role will be a 6-month contract, paying £550 - £675 pd inside IR35, depending on experience.
Security Clearance: Security Check (SC Clearance)
This role is inside IR35 - Due to the service of the role, it will now be based on an Umbrella solution.
Essential skills/experience required:
- A Registered Member of the Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors with experience of working in the Human Factors field within high hazard industries
- or a Chartered Member of the British Psychological Society with experience of working in the Human Factors field within high hazard industries
- First degree in Psychology plus MSc in Occupational Psychology, Applied Psychology or Industrial Psychology
- Or Ergonomics based discipline or an engineering degree with high psychological / ergonomics content (or equivalent)
- Proven experience in high-risk industries such as nuclear and defence.
- Strong knowledge of nuclear safety assessments and safety case development.
- Expertise in both qualitative and quantitative Human Reliability Analysis (HRA) techniques.
- Skilled in applying human factors principles to the design and improvement of engineering systems and processes.
- Capable of understanding complex engineering concepts and effectively communicating human factors issues with engineers and scientific teams.
- Excellent time management skills, with the ability to deliver work within stringent deadlines.
- Well-versed in applying psychological ethics in both research and professional practice.
- Proficient in conducting incident and event investigations, identifying root causes, and recommending measures to prevent recurrence.
Role Profile / Responsibilities:
- Support the Principal Engineer (Human Factors)
- Mentor and assist in the professional development of junior human factors team members.
- Perform human factors assessments to support ergonomic design, safety assessments, and the validation of human performance in high-risk systems, processes, and facilities - such as error analysis, workload analysis, and human reliability assessments.
- Develop scopes of work, cost estimates, and timelines for human factors assessments related to business programs.
- Review and approve assessments conducted by other team members to ensure accuracy and quality.
- Engage with regulatory bodies to address human factors-related concerns and compliance matters.
- Promote human-centred design principles and help shape the development of socio-technical systems, processes, and facilities within the business.
- Offer expert guidance and support in human factors
- Ensure that evidence-based behavioural science practices are consistently applied throughout the business.
- Keep up to date with the latest developments in human factors, human performance, and industrial psychology to ensure the integration of best practices.
- Contribute to the development and delivery of human factors training programs for the business.
- Act as a primary point of contact for other engineering teams seeking advice on human factors engineering challenges.
- Lead investigations into incidents and events to identify root causes and recommend measures to prevent recurrence.
