Job Title: Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

Location: Based near Portsmouth

Salary: £40,000 - £60,000 (Dependent on Experience)

Contract: Permanent

Shift Pattern: Office-based (Monday to Thursday: 8:00am – 4:15pm, Friday: 8:00am – 3:00pm)

Team Size: 15 engineers across hydraulics, electrical, electronics, mechanical, etc.

About the Role:

Due to rapid growth, we are seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join an expanding team within a fast-paced and dynamic environment. The company is looking to bring in an experienced engineer to manage ongoing and upcoming new product development (NPD) projects. As part of the engineering team, you will play a critical role in designing bespoke mechanical systems for a variety of cutting-edge products. This is an exciting opportunity to work on both current and future innovative products within a company that is set to grow significantly over the next 5 years.

You will manage and collaborate with a team of 15 engineers across different disciplines, working on multiple projects simultaneously, including 7 NPD projects and 4-5 ongoing day-to-day projects.

The Role:

As a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, you will be involved in the design, development, and execution of bespoke mechanical systems for a variety of large-scale, high-profile projects. Your responsibilities will include:

• Lead the design and development of mechanical systems, ensuring designs meet customer specifications and company standards.


• Oversee all phases of the project from concept through to completion, including prototyping and production.


• Collaborate with engineers from other disciplines (hydraulics, electrical, electronics) to ensure seamless integration of all system components.


• Utilize CAD software (any CAD platform) to create detailed 2D/3D models and technical drawings.


• Ensure the mechanical design is practical, manufacturable, and cost-effective.


• Mentor and support junior engineers in their development, offering guidance and expertise on project work.

Requirements:

• 5+ years of experience in mechanical design engineering, ideally within a fast-paced, project-driven environment.


• Strong experience with CAD (open to any CAD software).


• Proven experience in designing bespoke mechanical systems, ideally for complex machinery or equipment.


• Strong understanding of mechanical principles such as thermodynamics, materials, tolerances, and load analysis.


• Project management experience, with the ability to lead projects from start to finish and meet deadlines.


• Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.

Desired Experience & Skills:

• Exposure to mechanical systems used in industries such as heavy machinery, marine or manufacturing.


• Familiarity with manufacturing processes like casting, sheet metal, fabrication, injection moulding, extrusion, and machining.


• Experience with gear mechanisms, bearings, and similar mechanical components.


• Experience with new product development (NPD) projects, managing multiple projects at once.


• Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
