About Us
Diamond Light Source is the UKs national synchrotron science facility. By accelerating electrons to near light-speed, Diamond generates brilliant beams of light from infra-red to X-rays which are used for academic and industry research and development across a range of scientific disciplines including structural biology, physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, earth and environmental sciences.
At Diamond we are currently undertaking a major upgrade of the facility, known as Diamond-II. Diamond-II will combine a new machine and new beamlines with a comprehensive series of upgrades to optics, detectors, sample environments, sample delivery capabilities and computing, which will ultimately generate an even more brilliant light source at a higher energy.
About the Role
The Radio Frequency group at Diamond operate, maintain, and develop RF equipment essential for the functioning of the synchrotron. The group is also responsible for design and development of highly reliable RF acceleration systems for Diamond-II.
We now have an excellent opportunity for a Senior RF/Electronics Engineer with good hands-on experience to support the RF Group with a high level of expertise in the construction, operation, design, and development of electronic circuits and systems.
You will contribute to the overall work of the RF Group with particular responsibility for certain aspects of the RF/Electronic systems including:
Development of new electronic circuits and carry out assembly and test.
Management and inventory control of the RF laboratory, RF test equipment operation and calibration.
Project management of small R&D projects for new products/systems.
Study and development projects for future upgrades including amplifier upgrades, electronics upgrades, auxiliary monitoring and supervision equipment.
Undertake simulation and analysis of installed and future systems using a variety of tools including electronic circuits simulators.
Carry out inspection, acceptance testing, installation and maintenance of other RF/electronic equipment.
Liaison with other groups such as Diagnostics. Accelerator Physics and the Operations team in diagnosis and repair or new systems development and installation.
Contribute to ensuring safe working practices are being followed.
To take part setting up and preparing for beam operation and beam-off periods, RF and general operation shifts.
Undertake on call duties following appropriate training.
Occasional shiftwork, during commissioning and in support of regular operations.
About You
If you have experience in the field of RF or electronics design, fabrication, and testing, preferably of accelerator related systems, then we would like to hear from you.
You should have experience of design, production and testing of electronic circuits, as well as supervision of procurement contracts.
You will also need experience of RF/electronic measurement instruments and data analysis, as well as good hands-on experience in electronic circuits and PCB developments.
You should hold a degree inrelevant discipline (e.g. Electronics, RF Engineering, etc.), or demonstrate significant equivalent experience.
Any knowledge / experience within the following areas will also be beneficial:
RF/Electronics simulation tools and PCB design software.
Particle accelerator RF systems.
Electrical and electronic fault finding.
You will display a willingness to take on a variety of tasks and a desire to learn and face new challenges, and you will demonstrate good interpersonal and communication skills to communicate with a range of colleagues.
