Supplier Development Engineer - Peterlee

Initial 12 month contract - likely to extend for the right person

36.5 hours a week, Mon - Fri, 07:30/8am start (slight flexibility on start/finish times)

Up to £29.00 PAYE hourly rate plus holiday and pension contribution OR Umbrella hourly rates up to £39.35 - depending on experience

Our client is a worldwide manufacturer of construction and mining products. They’re looking for a Supplier Development Engineer who has Fabrications and Welding experience, on an initial 12 month contract basis which is likely to extend for the right person; to assess supplier quality and ensure that all the products are free from defects and are following manufacturing specifications and legal standards.

What will the Supplier Development Engineer do?


  • A diverse SDE role where you will take care of suppliers, mainly for the Fabrications category
  • Lead ongoing automation projects and also audit projects happening and capacity planning
  • Assess potential suppliers via on-site Quality, Cost, Logistics, Development, Management (QCLDM) audits
  • Drive implementation of Lean, BIQ, & APQP, continuously reviewing supplier capacity, assuring production readiness through rigorous review of supplier PPAP submission
  • Provide technical expertise and leadership to the supply base
  • CPI: collaborate with suppliers to assure proper process control standards are in place & continuously monitor key manufacturing processes for improvement opportunities.
  • Responsible for monitoring suppliers’ adherence to PCN (Process Change Notification)
  • Quality Focus: Develop and maintain thorough knowledge of technological developments and trends for guidance of commodity teams in advancements of design, quality, and manufacturing
  • Ensure Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) is completed and approved before new parts are delivered. This includes leadership in Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) activity
  • Some travel required: up to 30% mainly regionally, very limited travel required overseas

What skills and experience does the Supplier Development Engineer need?


  • 5 years’ experience working with suppliers. You’ll have high technical knowledge in manufacturing & quality systems + Fabrications (e.g. Metals, welding, painting.)
  • Must have: welding understanding and how it works. Desirable: to have machining and painting processes and technical standards experience
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills dealing with both internal and external partners
  • Attention to detail and route cause analysis expertise
  • Motivate supplier to improve and invest in additional technology or processes
  • Knowledge and understanding of: supplier audits, PPAP, APQP, Engineering specifications
  • Knowledge of supplier evaluations and certification; ability to identify the methods, tools, and documentation for evaluating, selecting, and certifying vendors, suppliers, and partners.
  • PC literate: used to using MS Office suite - you’ll be trained on our client’s software.
