Principal Accountabilities
The Welding Superintendent supports the Construction Technical Support and Quality Delivery Managers in planning and delivering welding and allied activities on the HPC project. The role involves mainly liaising with contract partners to ensure that they understand and deliver the welding excellence required in the environment of a licensed nuclear construction site. The Welding Superintendent plays a key role in ensuring that the day to day welding quality is maintained at a high level and individual welders are supported and encouraged to produce high quality work and have the necessary tools and environment to perform at the highest level. The Superintendent will report to the Head of Construction Technical Support on matters pertaining to welding, pipework erection and metallurgical controls such as heat treatment and mitigation of system stresses.
- Liaise with the all key stakeholders within NNB (programmes and functions) and with Contract Partners to ensure that all welding and welding associated activities are planned and resourced appropriately
- Ensure contract partners engaged in welding related activities are aware of the expectations in terms of Prior qualification of welders and welding procedures
- Ensure that welders have been adequately trained and are aware of all site and UK specific regulations and controls
- Ensure that welding operations are being conducted in an environment that ensures quality and minimises the probability of defects
- Explore opportunities for improvements to welding and associated processes
- Ensure essential safety requirements are rigorously controlled
- Assist Contract Partners to overcome difficulties and challenges
- Compile statistics for welding and erection related activities to enable continuous improvement programmes to function smoothly
Dimensions
- The Construction Technical Support Team is part of the Site Construction Directorate and works closely with other teams on site as well as off site.
- Accountable to the Head of Construction Technical Support
- The majority of the working week will be spent on site at Hinkley Point in Somerset, some limited travel may be required to assist with evaluations or attend meetings.
- There will be a need to work alongside other departments and contract partners
Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience
- Higher level qualifications in welding (CSWIP 3.2+)
- Significant experience in welding and erection activities on large projects leading teams of people
- Proven ability to engage Senior Management and variety of stakeholders to work in the interest of attaining high quality welding with low defect rates
- Ability to contribute to the management of a high performing team that continuously outperforms expectations and objectives
- Understanding of Quality Management Systems and experience of the application of ISO 9001 standard in a construction, engineering or industrial context.
- Have a sympathetic and observant work presence that gains respect and cooperation of work groups
- Be able to write informative, concise and meaningful reports
- Possess excellent organisation and communication skills
